Substantial information on key topics such as industrialisation, social history and welfare.

School History - An excellent resource for teachers, featuring resources, lessons, games and quizzes. Beware some broken links on the Victorian pages.

Victoria and Albert Museum - The Victoria and Albert Museum was established in 1852 and specialises in applied and decorative arts. Explore the History, Periods & Styles section for inspiration.

Victorian London - This Victorian dictionary contains a huge amount of information on Victorian society. Select from over 40 topics to find out more.

Victoria Research Web - Excellent advice on where to find Victorian research material. Academic site aimed at researchers but includes some useful information for teachers.

Victorian Society (The) - The Victorian Society aims to study and protect Victorian and Edwardian architecture and other arts. The site focuses on current campaigns.

Victorian Web - The site is divided into topics such as visual arts, social history, technology and religion as well as a general section on the Victorians. Aimed at American higher education students, it contains a wealth of useful information about the period.

West Sussex Past Gateway - This site has a useful links page to local town and village websites, some of which have detailed historical information.

Learning activities

24 Hour MuseumThe 24 Hour Museum is the UK’s National Virtual Museum, featuring arts and museum news, exhibition reviews and online trails focusing on different topics. It also links to over 3,400 museums, galleries and heritage sites.

Follow the link ‘For teachers’ on the homepage to explore the educational resources. Of particular interest is the related 'Show Me website' which is aimed at children, and includes resources about the Victorians.

Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood - Includes a teachers’ pack called Victorian Children, which is available in the Learning section of the site. 

Children in Victorian Britain - This site is aimed at KS2b level and features activities focusing on children at work, play and school. There is also a useful links page.

Learning Curve - The National Archives’ mini-site, Learning Curve, provides online educational resources. Follow the link to ‘index of topics’ to find information on various themes from ‘Victorian Prison’ to ‘Victorian Children in Trouble with the Law’.

Teachers Resource Exchange - A database of resources and activities created by teachers, all checked by subject specialists.

Blists Hill Open Air Museum - Blists Hill Victorian town is one of the largest Open Air Museums in Britain featuring a number of shops as well as a working foundry and iron rolling mill. The site includes quizzes and games.

Bressingham Steam Museum and GardensThe Learning Zone provides information on the history of steam and how stationary trains work.

Ellenroad Engine House - Ellenroad comprises a complete Victorian power plant still housed in its original boiler and engine house and is the largest working steam cotton-mill engine in the world. Built in 1892, it is a magnificent example of Victorian engineering. The site contains detailed information about the cotton mill.

Museum of Science and Industry - Focusing on industrialisation, the Education & Learning pages provide information on topics such as steam power.

National Railway Museum - Includes downloadable activity sheets and information about the collections.

SS Great Britain - This site contains a substantial amount of historical background and details about the ship which was launched in 1843.

The Workhouse - This site covers all aspects of workhouses including images of the inside of one. View details on individual Sussex workhouses by selecting ‘English Poor Law Unions’ then ‘Sussex’.
